The Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa hosted the 65th Northern KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Cultural Festival at the Ladysmith Civic Hall on Sunday, 17 May 2026. The event brought together young participants from Dundee, Estcourt, Newcastle and Ladysmith, who showcased their talent through songs, dances, speeches and sketches centred on Hindu philosophy and values. The Festival aims to foster the spiritual, character, and confidence-building development of children and youth.

The Chief Guest for the occasion was the Honourable Mr Justice Ranjiv Nirghin, President of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha.

Proceedings commenced with the hoisting of the flags of the Republic of South Africa and the Ramakrishna Mission, followed by a march conducted by participants and parents. Thereafter, the audience was treated to a variety of colourful and inspiring performances drawn from Hindu scriptures and spiritual literature, including the Mahabharata, Devi Mahatmayam, The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna and the Ramayana, among others. The programme also included the official launch of the Centre’s biannual publication, The Jyoti. Lunch and refreshments were served to all attendees.

The Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa applauds all the children and youth participants for their outstanding performances, dedication and enthusiasm. The Centre believes that the youth are the future torchbearers of Sanatana Dharma, and that programmes such as these play an important role in nurturing confident and responsible future leaders. The Ladysmith Sub-Centre conducts Hinduism for Children classes every Thursday from 5:30pm to 6:45pm. The classes follow a structured curriculum for learners from Grade R to Grade 12, with a light meal served thereafter.

The Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa also extends its heartfelt appreciation to all sponsors, service providers, volunteers, teachers, parents, devotees and well-wishers whose generous support and selfless service contributed to the resounding success of the Festival.

In the words of Swami Vivekananda: “We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet.”
